Argentine Ant

Size: 1/10 inch

Color: Light to dark brown

Where found: near buildings and sidewalks

Potential treatment: Exterior spray

Argentine ants are about one-tenth of an inch long and range in color from light to dark brown. They are readily adaptable and nest virtually anywhere in massive colonies.

Common locations for nests are in moist soil alongside buildings and sidewalks, as well as between boards. You may see them traveling in trails, one behind another, and while they eat nearly anything, they typically gravitate to sweet foods. Eggs are laid throughout the summer, hatch in about 28 days, and reach adulthood in 74 days.

Argentine ants are not commonly found in colder climates. They are known to bite when provoked, but do not sting. Colonies can grow quickly, however, because they do not have natural predators.
